The Dog

Noble

The Galgo Espanol is an ancient breed of sighthound, sometimes called a “Spanish Greyhound”. There are several minor differences between Galgos and Greyhounds in appearance and temperament. The Greyhound is used to sprint short distances on a track while the Galgo is used for hunting and coursing and is bred and trained to run long distances over uneven terrain and under harsh conditions.

Abandoned

Galgos were valued as hunting dogs for perhaps 2,500 years, but today where they are bred in Spain they are often mistreated and abused. Many breeders or handlers, called “Galgueros”, frequently breed large litters - looking for dogs that will excel in hunting or coursing - then will select a few dogs that show some ability, and abandon the rest. The abandoned dogs are often hit by cars or starve, and many suffer from extreme abuse.

Abused

During and after the hunting season, the Galguero may get rid of the dogs he does not consider to be top performers. These dogs may be found hanged, abandoned in remote places, or taken to a “perrera” to be euthanized. Estimates range from 60,000 to 100,000 Galgos that are abandoned or killed each year.

Resilient

In spite of the abuse they receive early in life, Galgos are mostly docile and forgiving in nature. They make excellent house pets.
