Romin

Romin found himself at the FBM shelter in Spain at 1 year of age. Perhaps he wasn’t fast enough for rabbit coursing or maybe he was discarded by a Galguero who had too many litters. In any case, he was one of the fortunate ones who would now be able to find a better life in a loving family. Because of the number of Galgos that need homes, Romin was at the shelter for one year before Love, Hope, Believe Galgo Adoption picked him to come on a transport to the U.S. When making this difficult choice to choose the lucky few among so many, it is small things that can make the difference in who gets noticed.

The thing that stood out with Romin was his earnest need to be with people. Although pretty shy at first, he would bond almost immediately to someone who showed him kindness. The Galgos are accustomed to living in packs, so most tend to be more comfortable in the company of other dogs, but since Romin attached so easily to people it was thought that perhaps he would be a great match for a potential adopter who was looking for a single companion dog.

After arriving in the U.S. in May of 2018, Romin went into a foster home to decompress and prepare for his new life. Like Romin, the two resident dogs in the foster home both had a rough start in life. Apple Dumpling was an English Bulldog rescued from a puppy mill, and Bambi was a LLewellin Setter rescued from a hoarding situation. Also like Romin, both had emotional scars from their past lives.

It is highly unlikely that a Galgo like Romin had ever encountered dogs that looked like these two breeds of dog during his life in Spain, so his foster Mom wasn’t exactly sure what he would think of his new dog roommates. As a typical precaution when bringing a new foster dog into the home, she set up baby gates to keep the three dogs physically separated to give them time to slowly become accustomed to each other.

Of course, after the long trip from Spain, Romin was pretty tired and settled in quietly for his first night. By the next day, however, he had decided he did not want a gate keeping him from his new friends. When his foster Mom left to run an errand, she was surprised upon returning home to be greeted at the door by Romin and Apple Dumpling, both acting as if they had been best friends forever. It seems that from the moment those two had figured out how to knock that baby gate down and bust Romin out, they had formed an immediate and deep friendship. They had decided that from here on out they would do everything together and would not hear of being separated. It became apparent that while Romin did love attention from people, he bonded almost instantly with his foster home siblings

Normally not quick to trust, Bambi, also seemed to sense an innate gentleness in Romin. When Romin decided that snuggling and cuddling was a great way to overcome their fears together, she was hooked on this new big handsome gentleman. It became overwhelmingly clear to Romin’s foster Mom and Dad that this unlikely trio was the beginning of something very special, and that Romin had found his rightful forever home. In rescue parlance, this is what is known as a “foster failure”. It seemed that Romin was not meant to live as a single dog after all, but was destined to be part of this improbable 3-pack.

Romin’s gentle energy is the thing that most people notice about him. With the support of his new family and dog siblings he has overcome fears and now lives a life of fun and adventure with his best buddies. Apple Dumpling has decided that she is a Galgo and tries her best to keep up with her long-legged bestie on the hunt for squirrels and rabbits who are silly enough to try to venture into their yard. And Romin has learned from Apple and Bambi how to sleep in Mom and Dad’s bed, play with toys and beg for treats. Thanks to FBM and LHB, Romin has found the life he deserves and his adoptive family couldn’t be happier.
